ABOUT RADIOLOGY DEPARTMENT

The department of Radiology is the fastest recently evolving department in Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital (BDTH). The department started as early as 1999 as a one-man department with the pioneer radiologist (Dr. T.S. Baduku) as the only radiologist. It started with one x-ray machine, manual processor and a table top ultrasound machine, providing basic x-ray and basic ultrasound services. However, within the last five years, there has been tremendous growth in terms of manpower and equipment. We now have about 50 staff including 10 Radiologists, 2 Clinical and Radiation Oncologists, 7 resident doctors, 9 radiographers, and 17 technicians as well as other personnel. In terms of equipment, we can now boast of modern state-of-art equipment including MRI, CT, Ultrasound and Fluoroscopy machines providing highly specialized investigations/procedures such as ultrasound-guided non-vascular interventions, echocardiography, Doppler studies, special procedures etc. In the aspect of training, the department is actively involved in training undergraduate medical students during a two-week radiology posting. So far, about four sets of medical students have completed their radiology postings. The department has also been training residents of Family Medicine and Obstetrics and gynecology during their four-week rotations. Recently, the department has been given full accreditation from the National Postgraduate Medical College and the West African College of Surgeons for Residency training in both membership and fellowship programmes. Our first set of resident doctors have since commenced training.
