SERVICES RENDERED IN THE DEPARTMENT

Ophthalmology is a specialized field of medicine that deals with the anatomy, physiology and diseases of the eye and its surrounding structures.
The department of ophthalmology of the College of Medicine, Kaduna State University is one of the clinical departments that were created on 6th January, 2016. The department is engaged in research, provision of clinical services and the training of students and allied staff.

RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

The eye unit carries out periodic Researches in the area of disease progression, new innovations in the treatment and surgical approach to ocular treatment.
There are questionnaires which the eye unit distributes to find out the rate at which Charles Bonett Syndrome prevails in Patients who are blind or have low vision.
Recently patients who seen to have syndrome came and were diagnosis with the disease in the clinic, most times they portray hallucinatory features of seeing different images which are not real.
Some of our patients especially children have been coming with resistance conjunctivitis and we are going to pick up swabs M/C/S to find out the predominant bacteria after culture and subsequently its treatment.
Ophthalmologists are Doctors of Medicine that specialize in the eye and related structures. They perform medical and surgical eye care and can also write prescriptions for corrective lenses (glasses and contacts). They often deal with advanced forms of eye disease in patients with significant systemic illness.

TEACHING ACTIVITIES

The department received the Medical Students at 500 levels and teaches them the following activities:

  1. Introduction to history taking, clinical examination and special test in Ophthalmology.
  2. Clinical and Practice of Ophthalmology
  3. Principles and Practice of Refraction (Clinics / Tutorials).
  4. Ward Rounds and Bedside teaching (Clinics and Tutorials).
  5. Theatre Sessions (Practice / Tutorials).
  6. Special Investigations (Practical / Tutorials).
  7. Tutorial – Anterior Segment.
  8. Tutorial – Posterior Segment.
